Similarly, the extracurriculars here at Duke provided a wonderful outlet to push me out of my comfort zone and discover my passions, namely martial arts. The courses are difficult, yes but they present students with a lovely major positive changes in myself as a person. Academics on the other hand was another thing. This helped ease my transition and even helped me gain my social footing. Yet upon arrival Duke held an orientation program that allowed incoming freshmen to interact with upperclassmen and bond with fellow first years through various activities like service projects, lake trips, and other leisure activities. When I arrived I was confused and completely out of my comfort zone. Duke University is multi-faceted in the various opportunities it has to offer. Most professors are great, but some are only there to do research and are forced to grudgingly teach a class or two, so look them up on Bruinwalk before enrolling in their classes. You will have to work your butt off, sometimes in less-than-ideal circumstances, but the returns will be more than worth it. In terms of academics, I will simply say that UCLA is a top school. If you're looking for a rad party scene, just cross the street into frat row, and you'll find parties every week. The campus itself is gorgeous (I love taking evening walks around sunset), and you can learn about the history of it from guided tours if you want. There are several dining halls right next to the dorms that each cater to a different style (ie dine-in, to-go, vegan specialties), as well as a few restaurants on campus and the nearby Westwood Village. Senior: If you can attend in-person classes, UCLA is a great school! The student dorms are on the expensive side, but well worth the price. I highly recommend this school to anyone inquiring. I have already been able to join several extracurriculars and have explored all of the opportunities given to me. It allows for only 10 minutes between classes which ends up being more than enough time to get there and you can finish your day in three hours! I am a bio major so my Tues/Thurs consist of labs but if I didn't have them I would only have one class on those days. The campus is a bit small and quite windy, things I had not entirely expected at first, but I think it size works in its favor. We have the same classes as well so we are able to help each other out with the understand of each subject. It has allowed for me to be able to be a part of a wonderful group of people who are on the same pre-medical track as I am. I signed up to participate in the Freshmen Success Community (FSC) and it has opened so many doors for me. Freshman: I have liked my experience so far at UMass Boston.
